Clean Truck Check

Newly required from C.A.R.B. is the Clean Truck Check.

We can handle all the OBD2 equipped vehicles with 2013 engine year and newer and we can do the opacity test on 2012 and older engines making us a one stop shop for your fleets emission testing requirements.

On site during regular business hours are walk ins so feel free to Cruz on in.

We are available outside of regular hours for mobile services. If you require our services, send us an email at Cruzinsmog@gmail.com, providing your name, address, phone number, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and license plate. We will then work out a convenient time for you.

You can book a time slot by clicking the button below. We currently only have on-site set up and hope to have mobile soon but in the mean time you can email me at cruzinsmog@gmail.com for mobile.

Getting ready for the CTC OBD test

Things to do to have your best chance at passing the CTC OBD test:

  • If your Malfunction Indicator Light (below) is on, get your vehicle repaired as soon as possible.

  • Don’t wait - Do the OBD test early in the inspection compliance window so there will be time to complete the test if there are problems

  • Avoid clearing codes. OBD systems require substantial vehicle operation to be able to complete their emission control diagnostic tests. A vehicle that has not been operated enough, or has too many monitors incomplete, will fail the test.

Clean Truck Check (CTC) first-phase readiness criteria will require a minimum of Operation Since codes Cleared (OSC). If the vehicle’s test result does not meet that minimum, the vehicle result will be NOT READY and will not pass the OBD test. This initial phase has a very low OSC threshold and will be increased over time to ensure the vehicle has had adequate operation for emissions monitors to complete their diagnostics checks.

Phase 1 Minimum OSC

  1. 3 Warm-Up Cycles (WUC)

  2. If the vehicle OBD system does not collect WUC, the CTC test will check for a minimum of 100 miles OSC.

  3. If neither WUC nor mileage are in the test record, the CTC test will check for a minimum of 200 minutes of OSC

As of September 13, 2024, CARB will be tightening the Readiness Criteria applied to On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) test submissions for the Clean Truck Check. The minimum number of warm-up cycles since the OBD codes were last cleared will be increased from three to five

In addition, vehicles whose OBD systems report Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (PDTCs) will have their Operation Since code Clear (OSC) thresholds multiplied by a factor of three. For example, a vehicle with one or more PDTCs will have to have at least 15 warm-up cycles since the last OBD code cleared.

Please check for OBD Readiness Criteria updates available on CARB's website

Currently this is a blind test and results are sent to your CTC-VIS account. The technician will not know the results of your test.

For opacity tested vehicles, a visual inspection is required. Customers who come in for their test need to prepare prior to the inspection by making sure they know where their Emission control label is and that their emission control devices can be accessed for inspection. that means RV’s that have the engine in the rear under the bed will need to make arrangements to have the bed removed prior to the test. Failure to do both of these may result in a failing inspection. The inspector may be able to help with the removal of engine or emission control devices coverings for a fee.
